One man has been charged with aggravated assault after a St. Catharines taxi driver was stabbed early Friday morning.

Niagara Regional Police issued a news release on Friday afternoon saying they were called to the emergency room at the St. Catharines hospital at 1:45 a.m. after a man arrived with stab wounds.

Police said they learned the victim was a taxi driver and was stabbed by a customer. They said he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is recovering in hospital.

They added that they located a scene on Welland Canal Parkway in St. Catharines, south of Glendale Avenue and a weapon was also recovered.

Police initially arrested two people. One of them, a 29-year-old Thorold man named Daniel Ibarra Vargas, was charged with aggravated assault and uttering threats.

Police said the other was released unconditionally.
