It’s a snow day in Toronto for most kids — but some parents and guardians of students at the city’s biggest school board didn’t get the message due to a “technical issue.”
The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) said it advised families shortly after 6 a.m. that schools would be closed during the biggest snowstorm of the year so far, with up to 40 centimetres of snowfall expected by day’s end.
However, the board said that a glitch with the third-party system it uses to send emails caused a “significant delay in delivery,” and some families never got the message at all.
“We understand how important timely communication is, especially during weather-related events and school closures, and we regret any inconvenience this may have caused. Please be assured that we are working to identify and resolve this issue moving forward,” a note sent to parents, which was viewed by CTV News, read.
The board noted that the school closures were communicated on its social media channels as well as its website at 6 a.m. The TDSB added that it was not the only board that ran into the issue Thursday morning, but didn’t say which boards it was referring to.
Almost all schools within the Greater Toronto Area were closed Thursday because of the storm, with the exception of schools in Durham Region, which remain open.
All TDSB schools and sites, including child care centres, are closed today due to the weather forecast. https://t.co/BIatgBaquz
