One person has been taken to hospital after a fire broke out at an encampment outside a downtown church overnight.

Crews responded to the scene at Yonge and Charles streets shortly after 6 a.m. for reports of a fire.

Toronto Paramedic Services said they transported one person to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Several items outside the church appeared damaged after the flames were extinguished.

The exact cause of the fire is not yet known.
