Hwy. 401 express lanes reopen in Pickering after two people struck and injured

A crash that shut down all eastbound lanes of Highway 401 in Pickering sent a transport truck driver to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

All eastbound express lanes of Hwy. 401 have now reopened in Pickering following a serious early-morning collision that left two people injured.

It happened around 4 a.m. in the eastbound express lanes, just before Liverpool Road, Ontario Provincial Police said.

“There was an initial collision involving a tractor trailer and SUV,” OPP said. “Following the initial collision, the driver and the passenger of the tractor trailer exited the vehicle and were subsequently struck in a secondary incident involving another vehicle.”

The driver of the transport truck was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

All eastbound express lanes of the highway were closed between Whites and Brock roads for around nine hours following the collision. All lanes reopened shortly after 1 p.m.
