The police watchdog is investigating the death of a man who fell from a balcony near Jane St. and Hwy. 401 while officers were responding to a call.

The province’s police watch dog is investigating the death of a 27-year-old man in North York after a fall from a balcony.

The SIU says it was notified after Toronto police officers were in the area at the time of the man’s death and invoked its mandate.

According to a news release, police were called at around 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 to an apartment building near Jane Street and Highway 401 for a domestic violence investigation.

Investigators say officers were attempting to locate and arrest a man inside an apartment unit when he was later found on the ground below.

Paramedics responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene, the SIU said.

Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to the case, and a post-mortem examination is scheduled for tomorrow.

The SIU is asking anyone with information, including video or photos, to come forward.
