Toronto police have arrested an additional suspect who they allege shattered a glass door during an “unlawful demonstration” targeting a private event hosted by a Toronto Metropolitan University student group last week.
The incident happened at a building in the Bay and Elm streets area at around 1:15 p.m. on Nov. 5.
The group Students Supporting Israel previously said in a statement on social media that it was hosting Israeli soldiers as part of a “peaceful event” when demonstrators “violently stormed” the premises.
For its part, another student group called Students for Justice in Palestine has said some of its members were “grabbed, shoved, chased and thrown to the ground” by one of the Israeli soldiers present while they protested the event.
Following the incident, police arrested five individuals and said that its Hate Crime Unit was investigating.
In a news release on Thursday, police confirmed the arrest of a sixth suspect.
The accused, police said, “used a tool to shatter an interior glass door” while partaking in the unlawful demonstration.”
A victim who attempted to intervene was allegedly assaulted by the accused, police added.
Qabil Ibrahim, 26, of Toronto, was arrested on Wednesday and charged with five offences, including forcible entry and assault.
Toronto Metropolitan University previously issued a statement following the incident, noting that it was “deeply concerned.”
“The actions that took place on Wednesday are unacceptable and do not reflect the values of our community,” it said at the time.
Police have said that the actions of the demonstrators “caused those in attendance to fear for their safety” and that one individual sustained injuries from broken glass following the forced entry.
