The Blue Jays could clinch a playoff spot as soon as tonight but they will need a little help.

The club is set to open a three-game series on the road against the Kansas City Royals, with first pitch scheduled for 7:40 p.m.

Max Scherzer will be on the mound for the Blue Jays while Michael Lorenzen takes the ball for the Royals.

A win would give the 89-64 Blue Jays their 90th win of the season.

Should that happen, the Jays could theoretically clinch a playoff spot with loses by any two of the following teams who are also in action tonight: Detroit Tigers (versus the Atlanta Braves), Boston Red Sox (versus the Tampa Bay Rays) and Cleveland Guardians (versus the Minnesota Twins).

Of course, the Jays likely have higher ambitions at this point with an American League East division title in sight.

The Jays currently enjoy a three-game lead on the New York Yankees for the division crown but also hold the tie breaker.

That means their magic number, referring to any combination of Jays wins and Yankees losses, now stands at six.

The Blue Jays have nine games left in the regular season, including tonight.

Should they win at least five of those games, they would surpass their win total from 2015 (93) and have their highest number of wins since the club won its second of back-to-back World Series titles in 1993 (95 wins).
