Toronto police say a 40-year-old man has now been charged in the fatal shooting of a Nigerian man on a GO bus near Yorkdale mall over the weekend.
According to police, the victim and suspect boarded a bus at the Yorkdale GO bus terminal near Yorkdale and Allen roads at around 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Police allege the suspect shot the victim on the bus before fleeing the area on foot. The victim, who has been identified as 46-year-old Osemwengie Irorere of Nigeria, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the suspect was located and arrested a short time later.
He has now been identified as 40-year-old Tyrel Gibson, of Toronto. He is facing one count of first-degree murder in connection with the deadly shooting.
Suspect has lengthy criminal record
According to court documents viewed by CTV News Toronto, Gibson’s criminal record dates back nearly two decades.
He has faced nearly two dozen charges, including attempted murder on two different occasions in 2013. Gibson ended up pleading guilty to a “lesser included offence” in relation to those charges.
CTV News Toronto also learned that in 2015, Gibson pleaded guilty to aggravated assault, using a firearm, possession of a firearm with ammunition and possession of an unauthorized firearm. He was given a lifetime weapon prohibition order.
In 2017, he was sentenced to eight years in prison, but it is not clear how much time he served.
