‘An unfortunate and tragic incident’: Woman killed while crossing the road at a crosswalk in Etobicoke, Toronto police say

Toronto police said they were called to that area just after 9 a.m. for reports of a pedestrian who had been struck by a truck.

A 35-year-old woman has died after being hit by the driver of a white Ford truck while crossing the road in Etobicoke on Thursday morning, Toronto police say.

The crash happened near Islington Avenue and Dixon Road.

Toronto police said they were called to that area just after 9 a.m. for a personal injury collision.

Speaking with the media at the scene late Thursday morning, Duty Insp. Peter Wallace said the driver of a box truck travelling southbound on Islington made a right turn (westbound) onto Dixon and hit a female pedestrian who was crossing the street from the north side to the south side at the crosswalk.

“Officers attended the scene and rendered medical assistance. Sadly, the female was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said Wallace, who added that the driver of the truck, a 26-year-old man, remained on scene and “cooperated” with police.

The driver was not injured in the collision.

Wallace said investigators are working to notifying the victim’s next of kin.

“Our thoughts are with the family. This is an unfortunate and tragic incident,” Wallace said.

Traffic Services is investigating. Officers are also canvassing the area and speaking with witnesses as part of the investigation, Wallace said.

Islington was closed at Dixon but has since reopened.
